Morehouse College SafeSpace is a student advocacy organization and a homosexual-heterosexual alliance whose mission is to serve as an organization that engages in the struggle to create a safe, respectful, and sustainable space on campus that openly addresses issues surrounding marginalized groups (religious, sexual orientation, gender identity, etc.) on campus, with a particular focus on the black GBTQ community. SafeSpace operates intentionally and strategically to influence the campus on an individual, cultural, and institutional level by collaboratively working with the student, faculty, and administration of the college. Morehouse College is an all-male, predominately African American college that was founded on Christian principles. The culture of this college is not very accepting of its GBTQ community and the atmosphere can be stifling to the development of students who are non-gender conformative. Therefore, the work that SafeSpace has been able to accomplish within this environment is noteworthy. With SafeSpace, Morehouse has become more aware of the issues that affect these marginalized students and other students who feel underrepresented or affirmed on campus.
Safe Space is not just an ordinary organization, but a MOVEMENT; a new renaissance; a new collective; a new light; a refreshing hope for social justice and the future of Morehouse College and the world.
